These days motion picture posters are invaluable collectible items, although to start with, they were just one single more technique the considerable studios experimented with to persuade audiences to go to the motion pictures. Bruce Hershenson, a vintage poster seller, explains the roots of movie poster collecting.

Before 1940, every film studio maintained its very own companies ( or exchange ) in each and every main location. The studios would deliver the films and their posters to many the exchanges and from there, they would be circulated to the surrounding cinemas. The significant city theaters would probably just go to the exchange and pick up the pictures and posters right before they would present them ( for large movies they will obtain additional posters ahead of the starting to produce an intricate display ). Theaters in smaller urban areas would probably generally receive their films via Greyhound bus, which back then served almost every town in the country. The films would be in storage units that would provide the posters ( regularly just one or even a couple of one-sheets in addition to a group of lobby cards ) tucked in a pouch on the outside of the container.

Most cinemas would probably show a motion picture for three or four days ( as part of a program which may incorporate two features, a cartoon, a newsreel, and possibly a serial chapter ), then simply ship it on ( using bus ) to the following theater. Regularly the theater boss would put the film on a late-night bus following his last showing and it would probably arrive at the subsequent theater the following day, in due time to be presented for that night's show. The film may go by bus by means of a circuit of numerous movie theaters before going back to an exchange. After the movie came back to the exchange, it would go back out to extra theaters, and typically the posters had to be renewed, as they quite simply were torn and also tattered from being installed and taken down a few times.

This more than anything explains precisely why posters from before 1940 can be extremely unusual. Theater owners couldn't offer their posters to enthusiasts, regardless of how hard they begged, since they were essential at the subsequent theater. This whole system of needing to take care of every single studio separately sounds really inefficient, but do not forget that in the 1920s and 1930s numerous movie theaters were owned and operated by the studios thus only presented that studio's product ; and most of the independents would just acquire their movies from two or three studios, therefore it wasn't that difficult.

The vast majority of pre-1938 posters known were discovered in one of the above methods. Very rarely a theater owner ( such as the popular Charles Dyas, who began collecting in 1922 ) may order extra posters to hold, or someone that had access to posters may hold a particular poster as a token, but generally absolutely everyone who controlled posters thought of them as limited use promotion, just like newspapers. Old newspapers ( like comics books or baseball cards ) thrive in number simply because they were sold by the millions, and some consumers never throw out anything at all. Movie posters, in contrast, were at no time accessible by the consumer. It does appear especially amazing that the studios themselves by no means thought to preserve an archive of their posters. Lately a few of them have paid tens of thousands of cash purchasing back a minor fraction of the posters that they basically supplied for just pennies each !

I am not understating the scarcity of pre-1938 posters when I say that for at least numerous pictures not a single poster or lobby card is known, and for several others solely lobby cards or window cards are known. It is very rare to come across a movie from before 1938 from a major studio on which more than 10 copies of a one-sheet is known. ( Posters from inferior studios are usually located in large quantity simply because when the studio goes out of business they often have got thousands of copies of each and every poster around. A good example is the Norman Film Company, which created all-black cast movies. A tremendous supply of all these posters were discovered, so they are one of the most prevalent of all silent posters. )
